Introduction - The resource pack
These materials are specifically designed for lecturers and staff in further education (FE) colleges and institutions as well as work-based learning centres (WBL) in Wales.
Using more than one language is a normal part of everyday life for children and young people across Wales, Europe and the world in general.
There are four parts to this pack:
1. Three short films present information on the history, status and position of the Welsh language today.
2. A series of 20 portraits convey the experiences of bilingual speakers in a number of different jobs, addressing the value of Welsh language skills in the world of work.
3. A short quiz accompanies the film and the series of 20 portraits. (Using the quiz is mandatory as part of CPD and / or induction for staff and lecturers).
4. An Agored Unit 1 credit – 10 hours (optional)
These resources are designed to stimulate discussion and raise awareness among staff and lecturers around attitudes to the Welsh language and the current use of Welsh in Wales and further afield. This is underpinned by the importance of creating an open and inclusive ethos towards the Welsh language; enabling everyone, from all kinds of backgrounds and from all parts of Wales to warm to Welsh and give it a go.
These resources underline the fact that the Welsh language belongs to everyone in Wales, and that everyone can embrace Welsh whatever their level and ability. In essence, it is necessary to integrate and normalise Welsh into everyday life so that it becomes a key part of the infrastructure of further education providers (colleges, institutions and WBL) in Wales.
